The Schneider Electric R9R5 is a 2-pole, 25A–63A, 30 mA type AC residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) from the Resi9 range. It continuously compares the outgoing and returning current and disconnects the circuit when an earth-leakage current is detected, providing protection of people against electric shock (direct and indirect contact).

Key features

  • 30 mA sensitivity for protection of people against electric shock (direct and indirect contact)
  • 2-pole version for single-phase installations
  • Test button to check correct operation periodically
  • Trip indication and positive contact indication
  • DIN-rail mounting, combines with MCBs in the same board
  • Must be used together with MCBs or upstream circuit breakers for short-circuit protection

Typical applications

  • Apartment and villa main distribution boards
  • Bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor sockets and wet areas
  • Offices, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings
  • Water heater, pump and swimming-pool circuits
  • Compliance with Egyptian electrical code requirements for earth-leakage protection

Selection guide

Use 30 mA for protection of people, 300 mA for fire protection at the main incomer, and choose the rated current equal to or higher than the upstream MCB rating. A 2-pole RCCB is used for single-phase supplies; a 4-pole RCCB for three-phase supplies with neutral.

Frequently asked questions

Does the R9R5 protect against short circuits?

No. An RCCB detects earth leakage only; it must be protected by an MCB or circuit breaker of equal or lower rating for overload and short-circuit protection.

Why does my RCCB trip frequently?

Nuisance tripping is usually caused by real insulation faults, moisture in outlets or appliances with high leakage such as old water heaters. Test each circuit separately to locate the fault.

What is the difference between an RCCB and an RCBO?

An RCCB provides earth-leakage protection only, while an RCBO combines earth-leakage and overcurrent (MCB) protection in one device.
